But in this article, we’ll provide you with a complete guide to Thai’s Go-Go Bars.
Everything you ever wanted to know about a Go-Go Bar is right here.
You’ll find out what is a Go-Go Bar, how Go-Go Bars work, some tips on what to do, and even what not to do when you visit these bars.
Knowing what to expect ahead of time will ensure that you have an enjoyable experience.
What is a Thai Gogo Bar?
A-Go-Go bar is very similar to a strip club. They are small clubs that look like a gentleman’s club in the US.
When you enter a Go-Go, the first thing you see is a stage in the center of the room. Jetting up from the stage to the ceiling are several poles.
There are usually ten or so girls dancing on the stage to club music using the policies to create erotic movement and mirrors on the walls for reference and inspiration.
Facing the stage on either side are arena-style booth seats, so everybody has a good view of the girls in the middle of the stage.
Most of the girls are wearing lingerie or bikinis, but some are dancing nude or topless. And if you are lucky, you can get a barstool right next to the stage and lookup. Wow!
Every few songs, the dancers on stage will leave, and a new group of dancers will take their place.
Go-go bars have their own charm, and there are many of them in red-light districts so that you can go bar hopping.
The downside can be a little cramped for space, and it’s not easy to talk to friends if you’re in a large group.
If you’re planning a big night out, costs can add up as you move from bar to bar.
What Happens in a Thai Gogo Bar?
1. Meet the Mamasan or Host
When you first walk into the gogo bar, the mamasan or a hostess will lead you to a table. Someone will then take your drink order.
The Mamasan is usually an older woman, who at one time might have been a dancer herself.
She’s in charge of all the dancers, hostesses, and waitresses, and it may be to your benefit to make friends with the mamasan.
During your visit, you might even want to buy her a drink or two.
Making friends with the mamasan can make getting to know the dancers a little easier.
If you want to learn more about the word mamasan and the vocabulary of bar girls and gogo bars, read this post.
2. Talk to the Girls – Getting To Know The Dancers
Once you’re seated at a table and have a drink, don’t be surprised if one of the dancers waiting to dance has come over to sit with you.
She may have been sent over by the mamasan or come over on her own.
She’ll ask your name, where you are from, and how long you stay in Thailand.
They’re trying to figure out how much money you have to spend and how long you can spend it.
All the dancers have numbers. So If a dancer on stage catches your eye, give the hostess or waitress her number.
They will bring her over when she finishes dancing. Once a girl joins you, you need to buy her a drink if you want her to stay.
3. Buy Girls Drinks (Lady Drinks)
Thai Go-Go bars make most of their money from selling drinks, and the dancers make most of their money from the drinks customers buy them.
These are known as lady drinks.
Lady drinks are more expensive than customer drinks, usually around 200 baht.
The dancers receive a commission on every drink that a customer buys for them, usually about 40%.
Understand that the dancer keeping you company will only stay with you as long as you keep the drinks coming.
Once you stop buying them drinks, they will politely excuse themselves and disappear. Something you need to be careful of when purchasing drinks…
If you’re buying drinks for one girl, her friends may try to get in on the action.
Especially during the show, waitresses appear with trays of shots for the dancers.
Don’t get suckered into buying shots off the tray for several girls.
Or else you’ll be in for quite a shock when your bill comes at the end of the night. Remember, this is how the bar and the girls make their money – selling drinks!
4. Bar Fines – Taking Bar Girls Out
You have hit it off with one of the dancers.
You’ve been having a great time talking and drinking, and you would like to get to know her a little better.
Most of the go-go dancers will leave with customers, but you have to pay the bar a fee so she can go; this fee is called a bar fine.
A bar fine in a Thai Go-Go ranges anywhere from 600 baht to 1500 baht depending on the club and how popular the particular girl is.
If she’s popular with customers and sells many drinks, her bar fine will be higher as they don’t want her to leave the bar.
Remember, go-go bars don’t make their money from bar fines; they make it from selling drinks.
Once you’ve paid the bar fine, it’s time to decide how much time you want to spend with the dancer.
You can either go for a short time (about one hour) or a long time (all night).
A short time will cost you anywhere from 1,500 baht to 2,500 baht, and a long time could be 2,500 baht to 5,000 baht.
Nearby to many of the go-go’s are hotel rooms known as short time rooms where for 300 baht, you rent the room for an hour and take care of business.
Most dancers prefer short times because they can go back to the bar and get more drinks.
5. Visit Girl Friendly Hotels
If you’re planning on taking a go-go dancer back to your hotel overnight, make sure your hotel is girl-friendly.
That means you can have an overnight visitor at no extra charge. Many hotels in Thailand are not girl-friendly.
They will charge you an extra fee for an overnight guest.
Another advantage of the girl-friendly hotels is they require your guest to leave their id at the front desk until they leave.
This way, if anything were to happen, it’s easy to identify the girl.

6. Taking Girls on Holidays
After spending the night at your hotel, your new friend wants to spend the rest of your holiday in Thailand with you.
For this to happen, you will have to pay the bar the dancer’s income for the holiday length.
If you’re taking her out of the bar for a month’s holiday, be prepared to pay anywhere from 9,000 baht to 20,000 baht.
Of course, the price will depend on whether she’s a regular gogo dancer or a coyote dancer.
Now that’s to take care of getting her out of the bar.
You have to negotiate a price with the girl to spend the holiday with you.
For Thai gogo dancers, that’s anywhere from 6,000 baht to 20,000 baht per week.
So if you’re planning on meeting a hot-looking dancer to spend your holiday with you, make sure you’ve got plenty of cash.
You’re going to need it!
Are Thai Gogo Girls Prostitutes or Just Dancers?
Not all go-go dancers are prostitutes.
The Coyotes, the costumed showgirls, usually won’t go home with a customer.
They’re usually paid a higher monthly salary and consider themselves models or dancers.
Their job is to attract customers and to get those customers to buy drinks.
Remember, the Go Go’s in Thailand make their money selling drinks, not through bar fines.
If you ask them to leave with you, they will usually have the mamasan send over another girl, one that’s willing to go with customers.
The nude or topless girls that dance get paid a higher monthly salary than the girls who dance in bikinis.
They usually have a higher bar fine and charge a higher rate for a short time or a long time. But they’re always available to leave with customers.
Lastly, the regular gogo girls who dance in bikinis or lingerie will always go with customers.
They don’t make as much salary as the coyotes or the nude dancers.
So their income is more dependent on spending time with customers.

Tips Before Visiting Thai Gogo Bars

- Money – Bring at least 10,000 baht in cash to cover drinks, barfines, and other Activities. Break it down into small denominations to avoid attracting attention.
- Condoms – Bring your own condoms. The ones supplied by the girls are of low quality. You can buy western style condoms at any pharmacy.
- Valuables – Leave your valuables in the hotel safe. Don’t draw attention to how much money you have.
- Bills – When you’re in the go-go bar, check your bill frequently, especially if you’re entertaining more than one girl. Sometimes you are charged for drinks you didn’t order. Remember GoGo’s make their money by selling drinks, so don’t let your spending get out of hand.
- Barfine – Always pay the bar fine. When you pay a bar fine, you can be sure your partner isn’t going to double-cross you or steal from you.
